What is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a female hormone tablet used to control, regulate or delay a woman’s menstrual cycle. Norethisterone is NOT a method of contraception. It is therefore important that you should continue to use contraceptive methods if you do not want to become pregnant.

How does Norethisterone work?

Norethisterone is one of a group of medicines called ‘progestogens’. Progestogens are similar to the natural female hormone progesterone, which can have an effect on a woman’s menstrual cycle. It works by delaying shedding of the womb lining to delay your period.

What are the benefits of taking Norethisterone?

Using Norethisterone can provide women with relief or control in regards to their menstrual cycle, particularly for women who experience heavy painful or irregular periods. It can also be used to treat premenstrual tension (PMT), as well as delaying your next period for times such as holidays. Norethisterone can also be effective in treating more serious conditions like endometriosis and breast cancer, making it a highly effective, multi-use drug.

You should take one Norethisterone pill to postpone periods three times daily, starting three days before your period is due.

Continue taking tablets to stop your period until you wish to start again. Your period should come within two to three days after stopping Norethisterone. You should not use Norethisterone to stop your period once started.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless your next tablet is nearly due, in which case skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the normal time. You may find that if a dose is late or missed, you experience some light bleeding or spotting. It is therefore advised that you have some panty liners or similar if needed.
